Minor pair

A market label often used for a pair of widely traded currencies that excludes USD, such as EUR/GBP, AUD/NZD or GBP/JPY. Classification is not universal. Liquidity, spread, financing and volatility depend on the specific pair and conditions; “minor” does not prescribe a fixed trading-cost ranking.
Example.

EUR/GBP 0.8500 means GBP 0.85 per EUR, with no USD in the pair. A EUR 10,000 position has GBP 1 per 0.0001 pip under the assumed specification. A USD account then needs conversion, rather than assigning USD 1 directly.

Minor and cross

Minor often denotes a pair of widely traded currencies without USD, such as EUR/GBP or GBP/JPY. Cross is used for non-USD pairs but also for rates calculated through a common currency. These usages overlap without making every cross an equally liquid instrument.

Two currencies and several factors

A move reflects one currency relative to the other. Long EUR/GBP is not a direct bet on a weak dollar, although global factors can influence it. Identify the actual components when combining trades; multiple symbols can share EUR or GBP exposure. Historical correlation is not a fixed hedge ratio.

Practical comparisons

Check the specific spread, commission, financing, quote precision and active hours. Some minor pairs can have substantial activity, but the label guarantees neither a particular spread nor wider costs than every major pair. Measure volatility in compatible units and convert cash risk to your account currency. A synthetic route through USD is not necessarily the direct executable quote.

FAQ

Is EUR/GBP necessarily traded through USD?

No. Direct trading and a synthetic cross calculation are different arrangements.

Is the pip value always the same as EUR/USD?

No. The quote currency and possibly pip size differ; convert using the actual specification and account currency.
