Price channel

Two boundaries describing a price region under a specified method. A drawn channel often uses parallel swing-based lines; window and regression channels follow different rules. Point selection and boundary availability matter. Neither reaction nor breakout is guaranteed, and width alone does not determine a trade’s reward-to-risk ratio.
Example. An illustrative parallel EUR/USD channel has lower boundary 1.1000 and upper boundary 1.1060 at decision time, a 60-pip width. A long Ask entry at 1.1002 targeting 1.1060 Bid has 58 pips to target. Channel width alone is not the trade’s profit.

Different channel definitions

A drawn channel uses a trendline and parallel boundary established from swings. A Donchian channel can instead use the highest High and lowest Low in a window, without parallel slopes. Regression and volatility channels use further definitions. The common name does not mean identical construction or signal mechanics.

Points and availability

Specify swings, axis scale, fitting method and wick convention. Sloped boundaries have prices that change over time. If an extreme requires later bars for confirmation, the channel was not complete at the extreme itself. Fitting the entire future history can create apparently ideal boundaries unavailable at entry; preserve the construction actually known then.

Trading around a boundary

An edge reaction and a breakout are different hypotheses. Stop, executed entry, size and exit timing determine risk; comparing width with ATR provides context, not the actual reward-to-risk ratio. Price can cross or remain beyond a boundary. Include failed channels, costs and the redraw policy when evaluating the complete rule.

FAQ

Does every channel have parallel lines?
No. Drawn, Donchian, regression and volatility methods differ.
Is channel width equal to target profit?
No. Actual entry, exit quote side and costs are needed.
