Smart Money Concepts

A group of trading frameworks using labels such as order blocks, liquidity sweeps and breaks of structure to interpret price action. Definitions vary between educators. A chart pattern does not by itself reveal institutional intent or prove an edge; write objective rules and test them on unseen data with realistic costs.
Example. A rule labels a close above confirmed swing 1.1050 as BOS and a non-overlap between candles one and three as FVG. These labels can organise a chart. They do not establish that a bank bought a particular size or that every marked zone must be filled.

Terminology and variants

SMC covers a group of approaches, while ICT identifies a particular educational tradition; they are not identical definitions of every method. BOS, CHOCH, order blocks and liquidity sweeps can use different criteria. Record the chosen version rather than mix several educators’ rules under one label.

Observation versus narrative

Candles show selected prices and time aggregation. They do not identify complete global flow or participant intentions. Stop activation may be a hypothesis to investigate, but a high-and-return sequence does not prove it. A constructed zone is a signal model rather than an observed book of remaining orders.

Test the specified system

Define swing, impulse and zone availability, minimum sizes, entry, invalidation and expiry. Retain every event with realistic Bid/Ask. Unseen evaluation applies to the particular rule, not the entire SMC label. A favourable screenshot and correct ratios cannot replace net performance calculations and uncertainty assessment.

FAQ

Does SMC identify institutions’ exact orders?
Not from candles alone. Intentions and order inventory need other evidence.
Does ICT mean every SMC approach uses identical rules?
No. Specify the source version or your own unambiguous rules.
