CFD (Contract for Difference)

A contract for difference is a derivative in which the parties exchange the change in an underlying reference price, adjusted for contract size and applicable costs or adjustments. It does not confer ownership of the underlying asset. Leverage magnifies gains and losses relative to margin; delivery, financing, counterparty risk and legal protections differ from owning or exchanging the underlying asset.
Example. Illustrative EUR/USD CFD: 30,000 EUR at 1.0850 represents $32,550 notional. At 30:1 leverage the initial margin is $1,085, not $500. A rise to 1.0920 gives 30,000 × 0.0070 = $210 gross profit; an equal fall gives a $210 gross loss. Costs are excluded.

Margin is not the position value

For this linear contract, the price change multiplied by the base-currency units gives P&L in USD. Margin is collateral calculated separately, not a maximum loss. Account-currency conversion and the provider’s contract specification can change the displayed figures.

CFD versus deliverable currency exchange

A currency CFD provides a cash-settled price exposure; it does not supply currency for paying an invoice. Counterparty obligations, financing and protections differ from a deliverable FX transaction even if the quoted pair looks the same.

Check the account terms

Read the legal entity, client category, margin schedule and financing method. Negative-balance protection, where applicable, is an account-level safeguard and not a guaranteed stop fill.

FAQ

Does a currency CFD provide currency for paying an invoice?

No. The cash-settled exposure is different from deliverable currency exchange.

Is CFD margin a cap on the loss?

No. Margin is collateral. Exit price, gaps, costs and applicable liability protections are separate questions.
