Fundamental analysis

Exchange rate

The price of one currency expressed in terms of another. Exchange rates are determined by supply and demand in the foreign exchange market, influenced by interest rates, trade flows, geopolitics, and market sentiment. See What is forex.
Example.

At an illustrative EUR/USD rate of 1.1000, EUR 2,000 corresponds to USD 2,200 before charges. At the reciprocal USD/EUR rate of 0.9090909, USD 2,200 corresponds to approximately EUR 2,000. A customer's executable bid or ask can differ from the reference mid-rate.

Units and direction

State which currency is the base and which is the quote: EUR/USD gives dollars per euro. A rise means the euro appreciates against the dollar, while the reciprocal rate falls. A percentage change in a rate is not the same as the opposite percentage change in its reciprocal.

Displayed rates and actual fills

A central-bank reference, benchmark fix, dealer quote and actual fill serve different purposes. A single displayed rate may omit spread, commission or transfer charges. Obtain the relevant side, time and available amount before estimating received currency.

Market arrangements

Currencies can float, follow a peg or operate under intermediate arrangements. Policy and intervention may influence supply and demand. A published official rate need not be accessible for every transaction or account.

FAQ

Is the inverse rate always exactly one divided by the displayed quote?

Mathematically it is the reciprocal of that same rate. Executable bid/ask inversion swaps sides and can involve rounding or different charges.

Does a stronger economy guarantee currency appreciation?

No. Relative expectations, policy, risk, flows and the initial price matter; already anticipated information need not produce appreciation.
