Ichimoku Cloud

Ichimoku combines Tenkan and Kijun high–low midpoints, Senkou Spans A and B, and Chikou, the close plotted back in time. The area between the two Senkou spans is the Kumo. Common 9/26/52 periods and plotting offsets form a conventional configuration, not universally optimal Forex parameters. The lines describe related historical price information; cloud colour or thickness does not directly reveal orders or guarantee support. Values plotted ahead do not contain future prices. Match formulas and timing to avoid look-ahead bias in testing.
Example. In an illustrative EUR/USD daily scenario, price is above the displayed Kumo, Tenkan is above Kijun and the current close, plotted as Chikou, is above the price plotted 26 bars earlier. These are related descriptions derived from the same price history, not five independent confirmations of a future rise. The cloud can be used as a candidate reference area, but its thickness does not prove the strength of support. The conventional 9/26/52 settings are associated with the framework’s historical Japanese-market calendar; they have no automatic optimality on a five-day FX week. Sideways prices can repeatedly cross the cloud. Verify formulas, plotting offsets and information available at each decision, then test the complete rule.

The time axis and information availability

Spans A and B calculated at time t are available at t and plotted at t + 26 periods. The cloud displayed at the current price’s time coordinate comes from earlier calculations. Chikou drawn at t − 26 uses the close from t, so a historical test must not treat it as information already known at t − 26. Tenkan and Kijun are range midpoints rather than ordinary averages of every close. Source for the formulas: MetaTrader 5: Ichimoku.

Range-midpoint check

With highest High 1.1100 and lowest Low 1.1000 in the relevant window, Tenkan is 1.1050. It is not the average of every close: most closes can lie near one boundary while Tenkan stays unchanged. Specify the window and input series.

Rules without multiplying evidence

Tenkan above Kijun, price above the cloud and Chikou location describe related history. Their agreement has no predetermined success probability. Each filter changes signals and timing; evaluate the combination with costs, information then available and failed cases.

FAQ

What are the components of Ichimoku?
Tenkan = (highest high over 9 periods + lowest low over 9 periods)/2. Kijun uses 26 periods. Senkou A = (Tenkan + Kijun)/2; Senkou B is the high–low midpoint over 52 periods. Both spans are plotted 26 periods ahead. Chikou is the close plotted 26 periods back. These are related transformations of prices, not five independent market measurements.
What does the Kumo show?
It is the area between Senkou Spans A and B. Price above, below or within the displayed cloud can form part of a trend classification. Its width and colour derive from those calculated values; they do not directly measure institutional orders, prove strong support or forecast price.
Are 9/26/52 settings optimal for Forex?
Not necessarily. They are conventional settings associated with the original framework and calendar. Keeping them can support consistent comparisons, but popularity and historical origin do not establish optimality. Test the actual rule and avoid selecting parameters solely for the best past result.
Can Ichimoku be used during sideways trading?
Cloud-crossing rules can be whipsawed during consolidation, but effectiveness depends on the precisely defined application. The indicator does not automatically become invalid in every range. Compare regimes, costs and unseen results rather than assume that a filter removes all losing signals.
