Momentum

A description of price change over a selected horizon, or an indicator comparing current and earlier prices. Common forms include a difference, ratio and percentage ROC, with different units. Momentum is not automatically acceleration. A weakening reading guarantees neither reversal nor any strategy’s effectiveness.
Example. The current close is 1.1050 and the close ten bars earlier 1.1000. Difference momentum is 0.0050, or 50 pips; ratio momentum is 100 × 1.1050/1.1000 ≈ 100.4545, while ROC is approximately 0.4545%. They use the same prices but different units and neutral levels.

Difference, ratio and return

Momentum can describe a broad family of price dynamics or a specific indicator. State the formula: a difference has price units, a ratio often centres on 100, and percentage ROC on zero. The n input sets the separation between observations, so ten H1 bars and ten daily bars describe different horizons.

Momentum is not acceleration

A price difference across n periods describes movement over that window. It is not automatically a second difference or direct acceleration measure. Declining positive momentum can mean a slower advance rather than falling prices. Gaps also affect the reading, independently of how smooth the preceding move looked.

Rules and information

RSI, MACD and stochastic transform different aspects of the same prices and are not interchangeable momentum units. Specify whether a signal uses a level, change, crossing or divergence. Use values available at decision time. Neither a universally best role nor a certain advance warning of reversal follows from the indicator’s name.

FAQ

Does falling momentum mean a falling exchange rate?
No. A positive difference can shrink while price continues rising.
Why does one platform use a neutral level of 100?
It may calculate a price ratio times 100 rather than a difference or percentage ROC.
