Risk per trade
Common mistake: a stop guarantees the budget
A stop order may execute beyond its trigger in a gap or fast market. Correlated positions can also lose together. Distinguish planned loss from possible realised loss and portfolio-wide exposure.
Apply it
Choose a documented risk base, calculate the cash limit and use it in position sizing. Recheck the assumptions when account equity or market conditions change.
Budget is not the observed loss
If the initial chosen risk is USD 100 and a gap produces a USD 150 net loss, the outcome is −1.5R when R is that unchanged initial risk. Do not retrospectively enlarge the recorded initial budget to make the loss appear to fit. Analyse the execution overrun separately.
FAQ
Which account value should define the percentage?
Document the chosen base, such as current equity, and when it is measured. Do not silently alternate balance, equity and initial capital.
Can several 1% trades create more than 1% total planned risk?
Yes. Three separate USD 100 budgets total USD 300; correlation changes joint outcomes, not that sum.
