Account denomination

The currency used to report an account’s balance, equity and trading results. Profit or loss calculated in another currency must be converted into the account currency. The conversion rate and any fee depend on the broker’s contract.
Example. A EUR/JPY trade makes JPY 15,000. At an illustrative conversion rate of USD/JPY = 150, that is USD 100. At 155, the same JPY amount converts to about USD 96.77, before conversion fees. These are alternative conversion scenarios, not a forecast.

Where the currency conversion enters

Separate the pair’s base currency, quote currency and account currency. A 10,000 EUR position with a one-pip EUR/JPY move of 0.01 produces JPY 100. On a USD account, divide by the applicable USD/JPY rate to express that pip value in dollars.

Common mistake

A pip does not have a fixed dollar value for every pair. Nor does the account currency change the number of pips earned. It changes the reporting currency and may add conversion costs.

Apply it

Check the broker’s conversion timing, buy/sell rate and fee schedule. Use the same account currency and conversion assumptions in your position-size calculation and trade journal.

FAQ

Does the account currency change how many pips I made?

No. It changes monetary reporting and possibly conversion costs, not the measured pair-price distance.

Can quote-currency pip value stay constant while account-currency value changes?

Yes. If the reporting currency differs, a changed conversion rate can alter the reported amount for the same units.
