DMA (Direct Market Access)

Direct market access: technology allowing a client’s orders to reach a specified market or venue through an intermediary’s infrastructure, subject to its controls. It is not access to a single worldwide FX order book. A retail DMA label does not by itself establish who the contractual counterparty is or guarantee the best execution price.
Example.

An assumed venue offers EUR 60,000 at Ask 1.1000 and EUR 40,000 at 1.1002. A DMA buy of EUR 100,000 filled across both averages 1.10008. Venue access does not make the top price available for the whole order, and routing fees are excluded.

Specify the destination

DMA refers to a defined route through an intermediary to an identified market or liquidity arrangement. Spot FX is fragmented; there is no single global exchange book to access. Confirm whether an order actually enters a venue or whether the client instead receives a bilateral derivative whose provider handles its own external hedge.

Controls remain part of access

Credit, margin, permitted size, price checks, sessions and instrument eligibility can restrict orders before they reach the destination. Network time is only one component of execution latency. Visible depth can change or be conditional, and a routing acknowledgement is not a fill.

Evaluate the whole execution

Compare confirmed quantity and weighted price with a defined reference, including charges, rejected requests and partial fills. Check cancellation handling and the legal counterparty. DMA is an infrastructure description, not a guarantee of anonymity, the lowest price, agency status or unrestricted liquidity.

FAQ

Is DMA the same as ECN?

No. DMA describes access; ECN describes a network arrangement. One service can involve both, but the labels answer different questions.

Does DMA remove broker risk controls?

No. Intermediary and venue rules still govern whether an order is accepted and how it executes.
