Execution & tools

Fill

The execution of an order – the point at which your buy or sell instruction is matched with a counterparty and a trade is confirmed at a specific price. A partial fill means only part of the order has been executed so far.
Example.

An order requests EUR 10,000. Confirmed fills are EUR 6,000 at 1.1000 and EUR 4,000 at 1.1002: total EUR 10,000, weighted price 1.10008. If only the first fill is confirmed, current executed quantity is EUR 6,000, not the requested EUR 10,000.

Order versus execution

An instruction, acceptance acknowledgement and completed deal are different states. One order can generate several execution records. Read quantities, prices, identifiers and timestamps rather than assume that clicking a button created the intended position. A missing confirmation can also require reconciliation after an outage.

Partial fill and remainder

The unfilled remainder may stay active, be cancelled or be subject to another action depending on the order and fill policy. IOC cancels its remainder, while FOK requires the full amount under its conditions. Do not resend the whole original quantity without first checking what is already executed.

Aggregate accurately

Use quantity-weighted average price for several compatible fills, then calculate actual notional and price risk from the confirmed quantity. Commission minimums and separate charges can alter total cost. Netting can make the resulting position different from an individual fill: an opposite deal may reduce or reverse an existing exposure.

FAQ

Does an accepted order prove it was filled?

No. Inspect execution reports or confirmed deals and position state.

Is one fill necessarily the whole order?

No. A fill can be partial; identify cumulative executed quantity and the status of the remainder.
