Fix (fixing)

A benchmark exchange rate calculated for a specified time and observation window under a published methodology. Its inputs can include trades, order rates or indicative quotes, depending on the currency and data availability. The WMR 4 p.m. London closing spot benchmark is widely used for valuation and benchmarking, but a published fix is not a guaranteed executable price for every order. See Best time to trade.
Example.

A portfolio values EUR 1 million at a hypothetical benchmark of USD 1.1000 per euro, producing a USD 1.1 million valuation. A separate sale filled at 1.0995 produces USD 1,099,500 before fees: USD 500 below that reference. This does not imply that the benchmark provider promised the reference as an executable fill.

Named benchmark and methodology

Identify administrator, currency pair, benchmark time, price type and methodology version. “The fix” is ambiguous without them. The widely used WMR London closing spot benchmark differs from other fixing times and central-bank reference rates.

Observation and calculation

Inputs, filtering and fallback rules depend on the methodology and available data. Do not assume every fix is a single last trade or a volume-weighted average. Calculation windows and holidays must be read from the applicable published rules.

Valuation versus trading

Benchmark-related hedging can cluster activity, but does not guarantee a direction or profitable event strategy. An order linked to a benchmark has contractual spread, fees and timing rules; valuation at a fix is not proof of market execution at that rate.

FAQ

Is fixing the same as fixing a currency peg?

No. Benchmark calculation at a named time differs from maintaining an exchange-rate policy target.

Can I compare a fill with any daily fixing rate?

Use a relevant, predefined benchmark with matched time, quote side and currency. An unrelated fixing can give a misleading execution comparison.
