HFT (High-Frequency Trading)

High-frequency trading uses automated, latency-sensitive systems to submit and manage orders at very short timescales. Strategies can include market making and arbitrage, but not every high-frequency order earns a rebate or profit. Technology, venue access, inventory and execution risk are central to the activity.
Example. Illustrative EUR/USD price discrepancy: 0.4 pip on 100,000 EUR is 0.4 × $10 = $4, not $40. That is a gross difference before fees and assumes both legs fill as intended; a missed or changed quote can remove it.

A displayed discrepancy is not locked-in profit

Available size, credit limits, fees, rejected orders and the timing of both legs matter. If one side executes and the other does not, an apparent arbitrage can become an unhedged position. Fast systems also need operational limits and recovery procedures.

Different strategies, different effects

Automated liquidity provision can narrow spreads in some conditions; participants can also withdraw quotes when risk changes. Maker rebates depend on a venue’s fee schedule. The HFT label alone establishes neither misconduct nor a beneficial effect on every order.

Retail platform limits

Short-term chart trading is not equivalent to institutional latency competition. A faster connection or an EA does not guarantee the same access or economics. Evaluate the actual execution chain rather than promise a speed-based edge.

FAQ

Is a fast retail EA automatically HFT?

No. Automated trading and institutional latency-sensitive competition are overlapping but different concepts.

Is a visible arbitrage difference already a profit?

No. Both legs, quantity, timing, funding and charges must work as assumed. One failed leg can create unhedged exposure.
