Fundamental analysis

Monetary policy

Central-bank decisions and instruments used to influence monetary and financial conditions in pursuit of its mandate. These can include policy rates, asset operations and communication. Currency effects depend on expectations, inflation, growth and other countries’ policies; tightening or easing is not a standalone directional trading signal.
Example.

A bank leaves its rate unchanged but signals faster reductions in its asset holdings. Conditions can tighten despite the unchanged rate. For FX, assess whether this was new relative to expectations and what the other central bank is doing.

Instruments and transmission

Policy rates, liquidity, balance sheets and communication affect borrowing costs, asset prices and spending decisions. Transmission takes time and depends on the financial system.

Monetary versus fiscal policy

Government taxes and spending belong to fiscal policy rather than central-bank decisions. They can nevertheless affect inflation, demand and the bank's response. Analysis needs their combined context.

What traders assess

Distinguish today's decision, forecasts and conditional guidance. Examine real rates and both economies. Tightening can signal inflation restraint or weaker future growth; the currency response is conditional.
