Central bank
In a hypothetical scenario, a central bank raises its rate by 25 basis points while the market expected 50. This is tightening relative to the previous rate but softer than the priced scenario. The currency may weaken if the expected future path changes; the decision's sign alone does not determine a trade.
Mandate and instruments
A bank operates under its local mandate, such as price stability and employment. Rates, liquidity operations, asset purchases and communication affect financing conditions. Not every central bank targets its exchange rate, and responsibility for FX intervention varies by country.
Decision versus expectations
Compare the announcement with the previous scenario, projections and the path implied by market rates. A press conference can change the first headline's interpretation. Policy for the other currency in the pair can matter just as much.
Preparing for a release
Record the source time zone, related conferences, exposure and acceptable risk. A stop order may fill adversely during a gap or thin liquidity. Avoiding an event does not itself establish an edge either.

FAQ
Does a rate increase always strengthen a currency?
No. A smaller-than-expected increase, different projections or stronger tightening in the other currency can produce a different response.
Does a central bank set every FX price?
No. Exchange-rate arrangements can be floating, fixed or intermediate; policy influences conditions without controlling every quote.
