Interest rate
At simple interest of 5% a year, a 10,000-unit loan for half a year accrues 10,000 × 0.05 × 0.5 = 250 in interest before fees. Effective rates and interest amounts differ under another compounding or day-count convention.
Identify the underlying funding
Name the instrument, currency, tenor and borrowing or lending side. A policy rate is not automatically a customer's loan rate, deposit rate or CFD swap charge. Credit risk and intermediary margins affect terms.
Nominal and effective rates
A nominal annual rate needs a compounding convention. Day-count bases can produce different interest amounts. Comparing offers also requires fees, collateral and early-termination terms.
Expectations and FX
Currencies may respond before the decision occurs. Compare both currencies' expected paths, inflation and funding access. A high nominal rate can coexist with inflation or risk and does not guarantee an attractive return.

FAQ
Does a 5% rate always give a 5% profit?
No. Product, period, costs, taxes and exchange-rate changes matter; a reference rate alone does not describe the investor's outcome.
Are an interest rate and bond yield identical?
No. Coupon and market yield differ; yield also depends on price and scheduled cash flows.
