OTC (Over the Counter)

Over-the-counter trading takes place outside an exchange through arrangements between counterparties, including electronic systems. OTC does not mean unregulated, purely manual or always uncleared. Much foreign exchange is OTC, but contract structure and risk controls vary by product and jurisdiction.
Example. Two parties negotiate an FX forward with an amount and date matching a payment. That OTC contract differs from a standardised exchange-traded currency future, even when both reference the same currencies.

Market structure is not a safety rating

Bilateral credit arrangements, collateral and possible central clearing affect counterparty risk. Central clearing changes and concentrates aspects of that risk; it does not make every risk disappear. Regulatory permissions and client-money safeguards must be checked separately.

No single consolidated spot book

Providers and venues can quote different prices and sizes. A benchmark is a reference calculation, not a promise that every participant can trade at that price. Some FX instruments trade on exchanges, so the entire FX market should not be described as one OTC product.

Use turnover statistics correctly

The BIS Triennial Survey’s OTC FX total already measures OTC instruments. Describing a percentage of that total as the OTC share of all FX mixes denominators. State the data period, instrument coverage and methodology instead.
