Market participants

Retail trader

An individual trading for a personal account rather than as an institution. This everyday description is not identical to a legal retail-client classification. Data from one broker’s clients should not be presented as the behaviour or market share of all individual FX traders.
Example.

An individual buys 0.1 lot of EUR/USD CFDs with planned cash risk of USD 50. They trade personally, but legal client classification depends on the assessment and agreement. EUR 10,000 exposure does not mean ownership of banknotes or institutional capital.

Trading for a personal account

The trader bears the economic outcome of personal trades. Products can include CFDs, deliverable exchange, futures or others. Do not assume one market structure or settlement regime for every individual.

Costs and size

Small orders may limit market impact without removing spread, financing, commission or slippage. Results need exposure and cost control. Demo trading does not establish actual execution quality.

Data about retail traders

One provider's loss-account warning has a defined methodology and period. It is neither a census of all people nor the proportion of losing trades. Client long/short figures also depend on the sample.

FAQ
