Strategies & styles

Swing trading

A style seeking price moves that commonly last several days to a few weeks. The actual rules determine decision times, exits and position size. Holding across market breaks or financing cut-offs brings gap risk and costs. A wider stop implies a smaller position at the same cash budget, but the style's name does not itself prescribe the stop distance.
Example. A hypothetical USD 15,000 account, a 1% budget of USD 150 and an 80-pip EUR/USD stop at USD 10 per pip per standard lot imply 0.1875 lot before costs. With a 0.01-lot volume step, rounding down to 0.18 gives USD 144 of planned price loss; 0.19 gives USD 152 and exceeds the budget even before costs. If financing is −USD 3 per assigned charging day and exactly six days are charged, the cost is USD 18. Check the actual calendar: six sessions are not necessarily six financing days.

Decision timing

Specify which completed bars are assessed and when an order may be sent, including daylight-saving or daily-boundary changes. Fewer decisions do not remove margin and pending-order monitoring. Do not use a later completed bar as information available earlier in testing.

Holding through breaks

Weekends, holidays and releases can alter stop execution. Financing depends on assigned days, rates and product rather than the number of visible candles. Positive carry does not guarantee a positive total result. Record gap scenarios and permitted exposure before a break.

Style and rules

Swing trading describes a horizon, not a complete strategy. Direction, reversion or breakout logic can be evaluated. Compare monitoring demands with actual availability, and net results with risk and uncertainty. A more convenient schedule does not itself create a larger edge.

FAQ

Is a swing position always smaller?
Only under the relevant assumptions: the same budget and pip value with a wider stop imply a smaller position. The style or timeframe alone does not prescribe the distance.
Can financing remove an edge?
Yes. Include it with price P&L, commission, spread and slippage. Do not assume it is negligible or that a positive policy-rate differential guarantees a positive financing credit.
Can swing trading fit around a full-time job?
It may require less frequent decisions, but this depends on the rules, candle times and other commitments. Gaps, financing and the need to handle events remain. It is not automatically appropriate for every beginner.
