Commodity currencies
Hypothetically, oil rises 10% while USD/CAD rises from 1.3500 to 1.3700. CAD has weakened against USD despite the commodity rise. Dollar strength, rate expectations or another shock can outweigh the export channel; this does not invalidate every longer-term relationship.
Economic transmission
Export prices can affect receipts, terms of trade, investment and government revenue. AUD, CAD and NZD have different export structures; one oil price does not represent all three economies.
A conditional relationship
Correlation depends on the window, frequency and quotation currency. A common demand shock may lift both prices while a supply shock works differently. Historical correlation is neither a permanent mechanism nor a standalone forecast.
Currency pairs and portfolios
Assess the quoted currency's fundamentals too. Several commodity-currency positions can concentrate exposure to global growth or USD rather than diversify it. Examine joint-downturn scenarios and holding costs.
FAQ
Does higher oil imply a falling USD/CAD?
Not always. The supportive CAD channel may be outweighed by USD moves, rates, risk aversion or the type of commodity shock.
Is NZD an oil currency?
No. Agricultural exports and broader conditions matter; do not apply a CAD model indiscriminately to every commodity currency.
