Macro (global macro)
Inputs and expectations
Inflation, employment, growth, external balances, fiscal policy and central-bank communication can inform scenarios. A release matters relative to expectations and revisions, not only its sign. Different forces can point in opposite directions at the same time.
Translate a thesis into measurable assumptions
Specify the horizon, exposure, costs and conditions for review. A correct long-run narrative can still accompany losses caused by timing, financing or leverage. Use clearly hypothetical examples rather than attribute a perfect historical trade to an unnamed fund.
Portfolio and event risk
Several positions can express the same macro factor. Historical correlations are not permanent, and a safe-haven label does not guarantee appreciation in every crisis. Scenario analysis describes possibilities rather than certain outcomes.
FAQ
Does global macro analyse only one currency?
No. It can span currencies, bonds, equities, commodities and shared drivers; one position is only one implementation of a thesis.
Does a correct macro thesis guarantee profit?
No. Horizon, initial pricing, funding, execution and sizing can cause losses despite a partly correct narrative.
