ESMA (European Securities and Markets Authority)

The European Securities and Markets Authority, an EU authority supporting investor protection and consistent supervision of securities markets. Its 2018 retail CFD intervention introduced leverage and other safeguards; national authorities subsequently introduced their own measures. ESMA is not the authority issuing every EU broker licence, and it does not govern all European or worldwide trading accounts.
Example. Historical framework example: $30,000 notional at a 30:1 ceiling requires at least $1,000 initial margin, assuming the same currency basis. A provider may require more. This calculation does not determine a suitable position size.

Original framework and later national rules

ESMA introduced temporary retail CFD restrictions in 2018. It stopped renewing them in July 2019 after national authorities introduced measures. Refer to the applicable national instrument when describing a current account.

Reference: ESMA: end of temporary renewals. Checked 8 September 2026; verify later changes before relying on jurisdiction-specific rules.

Avoid blanket eligibility claims

Client protection depends on the legal entity, product and classification, not simply the language of a website or the customer’s location. A higher-leverage offer is not evidence of greater competence or better protection. Elective professional classification requires a formal assessment.

Supervision and an individual dispute

The supervisor, complaint process and dispute-resolution body can serve different functions. Reporting misconduct does not automatically request compensation. Use entity documents to identify the proper route, deadlines and claim coverage.

FAQ

Does an ESMA logo establish a firm's licence?

No. Verify the entity and service in the competent official register; a logo does not replace authorisation.

Does every European CFD offer have identical protections?

No. Check jurisdiction, entity, classification and applicable measures. Europe is not one account regime.
