Product Intervention
In a hypothetical covered regime, a major-pair CFD has a 30:1 leverage cap. USD 30,000 exposure requires USD 1,000 initial margin on a consistent valuation basis. Another product or client may follow different requirements.
Powers to restrict products
Intervention can prohibit or restrict marketing, distribution and sales of specified instruments. EU powers arise, among other provisions, under MiFIR; ESMA and national measures have their own scope and duration.
A package of safeguards
Retail CFD measures included leverage, margin close-out, balance protection, inducements and risk warnings. One cap does not describe the whole framework. UK and Australian regimes use separate national instruments.
Checking current application
Identify authority, date, client country, entity, product and category. ESMA's temporary decision should not be described as the sole direct source of every 2026 obligation. Local rules can be more detailed.
