Pension fund

An investor managing assets to finance retirement benefits. Foreign investments can create currency exposure, hedged partly or fully according to the mandate. Rebalancing and rolling produce flows, but their calendar guarantees neither size, price nor market direction. Fund structures and liabilities differ.
Example.

A fund with future EUR benefits holds USD 20 million of assets and hedges 60%, or USD 12 million. The residual exposure can help or hurt EUR performance. Evaluate the forward with assets and liabilities rather than as a separate speculation score.

A long-term objective

A fund finances benefits and manages alignment between assets and liabilities. Member demographics, regulation and mandate affect risk. Funds do not all share identical horizons, sizes or permitted instruments.

Currency hedging

A hedge ratio may be fixed, variable or partial. Benefit currency need not match all asset currencies. Hedges have maturities, costs, liquidity requirements and mismatch risk.

Rebalancing and flow interpretation

Changes in foreign-asset values can require hedge adjustments. A calendar nevertheless reveals neither the size nor price of a future order. Monthly flows do not guarantee a short-term FX direction.

FAQ

Do pension funds always hedge all currencies fully?

No. Target ratios depend on mandates, liabilities, costs and constraints.

Does a long horizon remove liquidity risk?

No. Hedges, benefits and collateral changes can require funds before the investment horizon ends.
