Prime broker

A financial institution – typically a major bank – that extends credit, clears trades, and provides market access to hedge funds and other institutional clients in the FX market. Prime brokerage relationships determine which liquidity pools a fund can reach. See Prime broker explained.
Example.

A fund has a credit relationship with a prime broker and arranges trading with two dealers within that agreement. It does not mean every dealer accepts unlimited size: limits, documentation and trade acceptance still apply.

The credit function

Prime brokerage lets a client trade with approved counterparties using the prime broker's relationship and limits. It is more than price provision. Depending on the agreement, it includes confirmation, settlement, reporting and financing.

Prime-of-prime

A PoP intermediary may extend parts of this infrastructure to smaller entities. The extra layer adds its own limits, charges and counterparty risk. The name does not give every customer a direct bank relationship.

Implications for retail accounts

A retail CFD agreement is separate from wholesale credit arrangements. Prime marketing does not remove conflicts or establish order routing. Check the entity, product and execution policy.

FAQ

Does a prime broker always deliver the best price?

No. Access and servicing do not unconditionally guarantee price, liquidity or results.

Does a retail brokerage account create a prime-brokerage relationship?

Normally not. A retail client's agreement and permissions differ from institutional credit arrangements.
