Execution & tools

MetaTrader 4 / 5

The MetaQuotes trading-platform family comprising MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5. Features, supported products and automation compatibility depend on the version and broker configuration. The platform is not the broker: instruments, execution rules, financing and client protections come from the actual account provider.
Example. The same strategy running on two brokers' platforms can produce different results. If a test assumes a constant 0.5-pip spread and no slippage, while an actual execution has a 2-pip spread and slippage, the test's cost assumptions do not describe that execution. This does not imply one fixed percentage difference or the same direction of error in every backtest.

Two platforms, separate programs

MQL4 and MQL5 programs are not automatically interchangeable. Confirm compatibility of the specific indicator or EA, the tester and the intended account mode. A migration requires checking logic and executions, not merely changing a file extension.

Provider configuration

Contract sizes, symbol names, quote history, margin rules and financing come from the account arrangement. Identically named charts can use different feeds or server sessions. Document those settings when comparing results or importing a strategy.

Reconcile tests with trades

Use a stated model for Bid/Ask, tick or bar paths, costs and order fills. Record script versions and verify restart behaviour, partial fills and duplicate signals. A smooth tester report is not proof of executable live performance; the software brand does not certify either the strategy or provider.

FAQ

How should I choose between MT4 and MT5?
Check supported instruments, compatibility of the particular indicators and EAs, the tester, account features and the provider's current requirements. MQL4 and MQL5 programs are not automatically interchangeable.
What determines spreads and execution?
The market, available liquidity, the provider's rules and systems, and the complete technical path. The platform is part of that path, but the MetaTrader name alone does not determine cost or execution quality.
How can I check support and security?
Use the official distribution, check current announcements from the developer and broker, and verify the application version. A past distribution restriction does not establish current unavailability or the end of support.
How do MetaTrader, cTrader and TradingView differ?
They are different environments for analysis, trading and automation. MetaTrader uses MQL, cTrader has its own automation tools, and TradingView uses Pine Script and selected broker integrations. Availability depends on the version and connection; none of these names establishes an A-Book, B-Book or ECN business model.
